“Cold” Call, Warm Welcome

Studying for the CFP® exam inspired me to think about where I wanted to take my career next. My online research led me to the Wagener-Lee site. After reading Rick’s bio, I thought, “He would be the perfect person to talk to for advice,” so I reached out with a “cold call” email. Meeting with Rick and Amanda Piper quickly made me realize how great it would be to work alongside such talented professionals.

The subject line of my first email to Rick was the Yogi Berra quote, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” My girlfriend wasn’t familiar with the quote and wasn’t sure it would get Rick to open the note. But I thought, “Rick’s a baseball guy. He will know what this means.” Lucky for me, I was right: Rick responded, invited me to breakfast, and everything just kind of took off from there.

Kevin’s natural talent for wealth management began in his childhood, with an assist from his mother, who was the family’s financial manager.

It All Began with a Piggy Bank…

As a kid, I loved labeling my piggy banks with different goals. Whenever my mom went to the bank, she would take me along. I originally saw myself in banking, yet soon realized there is much more to managing household finances than just opening checking and savings accounts. To reach your financial goals, it’s crucial to consider essential items like insurance, retirement planning, and estate planning. Having the freedom to live life on your own terms doesn’t just happen. It takes a carefully crafted plan.

A Firm Foundation

After college, I spent a year doing project management for a friend’s general contracting company. Although not directly related to my field, the job helped me hone skills that are transferable to my role as a financial advisor: Managing clients’ unique goals, creating customized strategies to reach those goals, implementing the plan, and tweaking it as circumstances warrant. At Wagener-Lee, I may not be managing a building project, but I am helping clients build more secure financial futures.

Fun Fact

Growing up, I was a die-hard Baltimore Orioles fan who played baseball competitively for 12 years. I dreamed of making it to the major leagues, just like my hero, “The Iron Man” Cal Ripken, Jr. Two summers in a row, I even attended Cal Ripken’s baseball camp, hoping to meet him, but the closest I got was playing “toss” with his brother Billy. Years later, I finally met Cal at an autograph signing. The moment I had been waiting for! I still have the signed photo of his record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game played hanging in my home.
